  • Ms Symonds, 31, braced for the northern chill in a long blue buckled-up coat
  • Supreme Court judgement threw into question whether event would go ahead

Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds were all smiles as they arrived arm in arm at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester this evening.

A Supreme Court judgement earlier this week that the government had unlawfully prorogued Parliament threw into doubt whether the conference would go ahead.

But the Prime Minister, looking to shake off a tough week in Westminster, led the droves of Conservative faithful who are flocking to the north west this weekend.

Mr Johnson, who will be hoping to use the conference to rally his party’s grassroots ahead of a likely general election, will cap off the gathering with a speech on Wednesday

With Ms Symonds likely at his side, he will attend a slew of speeches and receptions over the four-day event.

Unlike many spouses of first-time leaders, Ms Symonds is a veteran of Conservative conference after attending in previous years in her former capacity of director of communications for the party.

The Prime Minister exuded an air of calm as he arrived in Manchester, beaming with both hands shoved into his pockets.

On Tuesday, the eleven-judge Supreme Court bench unanimously ruled that Parliament had not been prorogued, prompting Speaker John Bercow to reopen the Commons chamber.

The government then tried to pass a bill to force the Parliament into recess so the Conservative conference could go ahead unhindered by Commons business, but this was blocked by opposition party MPs.

Ministers, including Mr Johnson, may therefore have to dash back from the north west to London in the event of urgent business.
